First Italy vacation? Choose a Rome vacation package

Lots of first time travelers to Italy ask. "Where should we go?"

In my view, start with Rome, but never in August. The heat is stifling in August and all the Romans are on vacation.

April, May, September, and October are absolutely glorious months to visit Rome. August, go to the seacoast!

As per Rome, where to begin? The history, the architecture, the culture; you will never be short of options in this wonderful city. Medieval, Baroque, and Renaissance landmarks fill the capital city of Rome, and the Vatican is right down the street. It's impossible to do it justice in a mere blog, and when one travels to Italy no matter where you visit you can't go wrong, but Rome is a great place to start.

David Beckham's move from the Galaxy to AC Milan was finalized Thursday, with the England national team midfielder set to join the Italian club on loan for January and February.

The exact starting and ending dates of the loan were left unclear, however, as were most other pertinent details.

For example, neither club would reveal who would pay Beckham's $541,667-a-month salary during his absence from Los Angeles. Nor would they comment on the specifics of "a technical partnership" being formed between the Galaxy and AC Milan, or whether the Galaxy would financially benefit from lending its top player.

"Terms of the agreement will remain confidential," said a joint statement issued by the Major League Soccer and Serie A teams.

According to AC Milan's website: "The English player [David Beckham] will be a Rossonero (red and black) from Jan. 7, 2009."

Italy Travel: Three Strikes You're In

Find a caffé or a wine bar close by where you're staying and patronize it.

First time, you probably will not even be acknowleged.

The second time, you will get a slight nod.

The third time you will be greeted by a smile and a certain look, one that says I know you've been here.

Each time thereafter, as soon as you enter you'll be greeted with a "buon giorno" and a welcoming smile. You are now part of the "inner" circle.

Skip a day or two, and when you return, don't be surprised if you get a hug and a "where have you been"?
